KIPOPO I

As études’ first project, Kipopo house holds a special significance: it represents the conclusion of a five-year discussion between Nicolas and Karine and the starting point of our studio.

This project taught us the unique nature of each endeavour and the complexities inherent in our design journey. Commissioned to design a house with an existing foundation, we embraced this pre-established structure as our guiding constraint.

Nestled near Kipopo Lake in Lubumbashi, this house delicately integrates with its scenic surroundings. The entrance opens onto an enclosed garden, offering captivating views of the beautiful lake. Handmade pivot woven windows in the living and dining areas intimately connect with this garden, blurring the boundaries of inside and out.

The core of the house boasts vertical proportions in each room, directing the gaze towards the lake while infusing the space with gentle, indirect light. Private wings on both sides provide serene views, framing the exterior to establish a visual connection with the lake, while maintaining privacy from neighbouring sights.

To create an illusion of continuity between the lake and the garden, the infinity pool seemingly merges into the horizon. A harmonious outcome, creating a warm and spacious environment respectful of the local materials and building techniques.
